These incessant coups in west Africa must surely be a source of concern to every loving democrat everywhere. Niger is the fourth country to topple her elected leaders in recent months. Rightfully, “elected” governments of west Africa sub region are demanding the restoration of the elected President back into office.
But why are coups a new rave in west Africa? Is Alassane Ouattara of cote d’ivoire or Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé Eyadéma of Togo justified in their demand? “He who seek equity must do equity”. Yes, coup d’état is never an answer to bad governance. It must be discouraged by all means and that is why we have elections. But when elections are not credible or leaders who designed systems to perpetuate themselves in office, then of course it becomes a catch 22.
